Across the South Sea Straights sits the island of Letras off the coast of Heimsdale. The tropical paradise has been a summer retreat for many a prominent Solserii family in Heimsdale, but the nation has mostly been content to let Letras do as they please. With a wealth of new international issues facing the queendom, Heimsdale seeks to fortify the waters of the South Seas within their domain. With trade and shipping through the Tidegate becoming more important, Letras serves as Heimsdale’s current forward port and corridor to the world.
By the order of Queen Paeline Rubystone, two of the ancestral sister ports on the island have been appointed direct royal governors. The Heimsdale Commission for Displaced Beings has been given complete control of the northern port of Nortvigar. The sister port of Espirarena is being annexed to establish Wechard’s Fist—a new South Seafort to combat and prevent piracy within the region.
All of this has left the residents of the island disgruntled with the influx of “Foreigners,” not only from the mainland, but from all over the world to the island of Letras. The island has been a regional hot spot of interest for investors, the Ruby Alliance, upstart Heimsdale noble families, pirates, and beings displaced by the dark water.
On the southern island of Letras, Admiral Nevi Alerii’s negotiations with the locals have devolved into poorly masked chaos. In a show of solidarity, Admiral Alerii attempted to fold a local fleet of ships into the Heimsdale Armada, but Letrans don’t sail like anyone else in the world. Unable to meet the demands of overly superstitious sea clans known as navidars, the port of Wechard’s Fist abandoned their gambit to integrate local sailors into the coastal fortress.
With the tides changing, many Letrans don’t feel content to stay in their distant seas and watch the waves of the world wash over them. With new gods warring across Ilderon, Empires spreading across Galken, power vacuums from the missing Crown, and an increasingly frantic Heimsdale Queen trying to respond to them all, an adventure from the seas of the South to the skies of the north awaits those willing to tackle it.
The venerable Barcobeza (Captain) Lonyl of Letras has long sensed the change in the seas. Realizing he’s too old to change with them, he has decided to retire to the island. Lonyl has sailed the world and collected many curses. In a common Letran ceremony he has called together anyone in port to come celebrate with him. The ceremony involves passing on his curses to the next generation. Above all, southern sailors believe the seas are fair. A balancing force guides the waves. Blessings come to those who suffer and tragedy follows those who profit. The old sailor has many a treasure and a curse, and no one is certain which ones he plans to give away and which he plans to take to the grave. Regardless, those who enjoy a drink and a story have made their way to the small coastal town of Rioloro.
