Using lost and unknown magic, the sorceress Elaina Lelia did the unthinkable. With help from her demonic companion, Terror Cry, she stole an entire Earthfire from the nation of Ardorserii. In the wake of her goals, she left the country of Ardorserii on the brink of ruin teeter tottering between civil war and dark forces. No one has a clear idea of what her plans for the fire entail or what exactly the organization that she works for wants. However, they do know there are three more wells of divine energy spread out over two other countries that she could potentially steal.
Bonded by fate, a plucky group of criminals, paladins, scholars, and foreigners have sworn an oath to prevent Elaina from causing anymore destruction to the world of Ilderon. After trudging through frigid mountainous roads and war torn country sides the group has arrived on the Ardorian border planning to continue their travels westward. If they are to predict her next move, they must understand the extent of her plans. The party has been tracking rumors of Elaina’s dealing in Ardorserii and found out she was first spotted in the country raiding a hidden library under the military fortress of Westwind.
The ruined keep lies on the Ardorian hills in front of them still looming over the Alilnegi border. Battered by war and sabotage, the aged foundation of the fortress still stands. If there is any knowledge to be gleaned from the rubble is yet to be determined. Stories tell of ages before the Shatterings where mortals used the flames of the Earthfire freely--of times when their magic could be freely accessed by all. The writings of a more primordially attuned generation could give insight into what the power of a fully functional Earthfire is capable of. If any of those stories exist, they might reside in the tunnels below. Their stories began on the banks of the Alyanga river beneath the hills of the fortress.
Upon entering the temple of Phianfell the group was met with the grisly scene that reflected the aftermath of a great battle. The corpses of dozens of elves littered the ground. A viscous black and green liquid formed puddles on the areas of stone that weren’t stained with blood. Even more concerning than the dead Dorii were the twitching undead bodies that were slain in the conflict. Hulking flesh golems, zombies cut in half still trying to crawl towards the few living elves, and skeletons too broken to move in any meaningful way we’re all splayed out across the floor of the antechamber.
A group of elven rangers were walking through the chamber with spears planting them in the back of each corpse, both elven and undead, ensuring they were truly dead. The party eventually recognized Boaski Alilrith among the living dorii. Boaski informed the group that she told Milanthelgar Jinprius Mari about the threat Elaina Leldia posed to the Earthfire. Immediately, the Milanthelgar began organizing groups of his soldiers to defend the Earthfire. However, at dawn a small horde of Archblight attacked the temple.
Boaski and the groups dedicated to protecting the valley defended the temple entrance against the horde. A smaller group of elves defended the inner sanctum of the temple to protect the Earthfire. In the chaos of the fight Elaina revealed herself in the smaller group and killed the elves. By the time the fight was done, and the temple secured, the Earthfire was gone. The Milanthelgar ordered Boaski in charge and for her to execute the Archblight commander she captured. Jinprius headed to Heimsdale to warn them of the incoming danger.
Boaski was put in charge of handling the withdrawal of the elven troops. Talking to her, the party found out she planned to travel to the Alilnegian capital with the archblight commander so they can interrogate the commander before she executed him. Fractis suspects she’s using the commander as an excuse to explore her curiosity and go to one of the great human capitals of the world before she departs Seadale. She allowed the party to investigate the inner sanctum. A closer inspection revealed 8 dead elven bodies. Each one with magical burns or moisture drained from their bodies.
With Alward’s and Solmaine’s information on Elaina’s style Fractis concluded that she had a powerful magically capable accomplice with her since Elaina prefers to not kill anyone on her own. Where the Earthfire once was, there is just a crater of stone, dirt, and the white crystal remnants. The Unrepentant’s hunt continues...
